Ensure your warranties remain valid for LED retrofit

December 2017

Converting your existing HID lighting to LED, or LED retrofit as it's now more commonly known, is a great idea and wherever possible, we actively encourage this: who wouldn't want to benefit from the efficiency and long-life performance of new technology, without the heavy investment cost at the outset?

Many private and public buyers are recognising the clear advantages and jumping onto the trend. Helping to fuel the movement, there are now lots of companies offering retrofit gear trays of varying quality, price, technology and features.

So, why retrofit?

  • Quick and easy
  • Low initial cost
  • Energy saving
  • Excellent payback
  • Improved colour rendering
  • Reduced maintenance
  • Improved functionality
  • Sweating your asset (getting the most out of what you already own)

Where confusion and doubt emerge, is with the issue of warranties. The recent changes to the CE regulation, now state that unless a gear tray has been tested in each product it is intended for us in, then it no longer complies, leaving warranties invalid.

This is where our 'buyer beware' warning comes into play

You need to make sure you do it the right way.

Our number one tip

Is to source your gear trays from the luminaire's original manufacturer. Which we believe is the only way to ensure you have the right gear tray for the job. Tested for use in your product, ensuring you have ticked all the boxes and are fully compliant - and more importantly, leaving your warranty completely valid!

If for some reason this is not possible, here's what to look out for:

  • Proven component suppliers
  • Correctly selected LED chips
  • Lighting performance photometry for the fitting - not the board!
  • Industry standards are present - ensure that CE markings are on the product and conformity documentation is provided
