Subtle feature lighting for Aberdeen's new £107 million development
The challenge
The new £107 million Marischal Square development in Broad Street, Aberdeen was designed to deliver a fresh and vibrant mixed-use quarter for the town centre.
The redeveloped site, once home to the former council headquarters building, St. Nicholas House, now boasts Grade ‘A’ offices with car parking, a 126 room Marriott luxury hotel, cafes and restaurants including All Bar One and Costa Coffee.

The solution
DW Windsor’s Vaio linear encapsulated LED system in a 4000K colour temperature was specified and installed to provide feature lighting to the building’s two façade fins.
Vaio’s robust construction and clean low-profile design proved ideal for recessing into the cladding material. In total 15m was used on each side of the two building fins, integrated vertically into the panels in a decorative staggered arrangement. Each 2m feature strip consisted of 2 x 1m Vaio providing continuous light, controlled by a photocell and time switch to provide dawn to dusk operation and the facility to switch off at a pre-determined time in the evening (potentially midnight).
Virtually invisible by day the integrated Vaio lengths bring the building Fins to life by night, creating a subtle lighting effect along the protruding granite façade.
The offices have obtained both BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and EPC ‘A’ ratings.
