Custom LED lighting columns reflect Redcar's nautical heritage

The challenge

In 2012 Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and the Environment Agency launched an investment package to inject £75m into Redcar; to carry out critical sea defence works, protecting local homes and businesses against the risk of coastal flooding and erosion.

As a secondary objective they decided to revamp 2.7km of the promenade area to enhance the seafront for residents and increase visitor numbers, in the hope of creating new jobs and businesses, to boost the economy. To complement the finished works and the iconic Beacon attraction, a new lighting scheme was required along the promenade.

Key project requirements

  • Enhance the seafront for residents.
  • Increase visitor numbers to boost the economy.
  • Complement the iconic Beacon attraction.

The solution

The striking design of the promenade reflected elements of Redcar’s nautical heritage and drew inspiration from the Beacon colours and design.

To meet the design brief, we customised one of our standard LED products to create a wave effect on the lighting columns along the Redcar promenade when viewed from either direction. One of the main challenges of the project was to ensure that the electronic drivers, cables feeds and LED Modules were extremely well sealed against the ingress of sea water washing and blowing in from the east coast.

Following completion of the works the promenade offers a pleasant space where people can take a relaxing stroll, and by night enjoy the colourful lighting installation along their way.
