DW Windsor launch new customer-focused website

Hot on the heels of their new exterior lighting catalogue DW Windsor announce launch of new complimentary website

April 14 2009 sees the official launch of our new website, redesigned to offer improved usability and ease of navigation.

The site, dwwindsor.co.uk, has been re-launched with a vibrant new look and content and features the latest in search functionality including an innovative product quote basket facility and members forum.

The new integrated lighting and urban furniture site will give customers detailed information and close-up photographs of all our quality products, including project photography, product drawings and unique-to-industry suggested complimentary column, column brackets and urban furniture feature.

The new site was designed in response to extensive research, Managing Director, Terry Dean commented: "Over the last year we have conducted a series of informal research programmes, the results of which have influenced the new website design and content. By listening to our customers and taking their views on board we hope to provide a market-leading site and enhanced user experience”.

Brilliant Brilliance

Blackpool bolsters reputation as a lighting destination, with son et lumiere installation.

Blackpool Illuminations saw an exciting addition this year as the town’s famous lights were joined by six giant arches. Part of an ambitious regeneration scheme for Blackpool town centre, ‘Brilliance’ is a permanent installation housing a spectacular light and sound show; a night time attraction for both residents and visitors alike.

Commissioned by Blackpool Council and the brain child of concept designer Greg McLenahan of Worldwide Lighting Design and concept design and developer Brendan Keely of BDP, the unique scheme, a 21st-century son et lumiere, was designed to further boost the resort’s reputation as a lighting destination, and forms part of the Council’s Regeneration by Light initiative.

Birley Street provides the main focus for the scheme, providing the backdrop for the arches while the three adjacent streets provide a flavour of the event with gobo projections pulling people in from the surrounding area.

Concept to completion
The concept for the arches originated from the idea of a continuous ribbon spiralling in and out of the ground. BDP liased with manufacturer DW Windsor to realise the massive challenge of building the arches. ‘Fulfilling the aims of the client team was the tricky part,’ says BDP’s Brendan Keely. ‘The need to include moving head projection and sound in the middle of Blackpool with the issues of rain, wind, the saline environment and the prospect of vandalism presented all sorts of challenges. The size and weight of the moving head projectors had to somehow be accommodated, protected and integrated, and it was also necessary to control the general street lighting and dim this at show times.’

With the design team originally instructed not to dig trenches for the power and control cabling, as it was believed the street sat on a concrete raft, a bespoke trunking and street lighting system was designed and manufactured by DW Windsor.

The suspended 350m trunking spans the top of the arches. Drawing clean lines through the structures, it also acts as a housing for the innovative street lighting (probably the first time it has been done this way in the UK), which relies entirely on a series of recessed linear LED fittings (45 strips, each 1m long and with 188 white LEDs).

The clutter of conventional street lighting is avoided and the whole system uses 630W, slicing a substantial 60 per cent off earlier energy bills.
Constructing the arches, which have a tubular steel skeleton covered by marine-grade aluminium, took DW Windsor into entirely new territory. Apart from the sheer scale of the project and the logistics entailed, the torsion on each arch meant that each element of the aluminium skin had to be shaped and installed individually. The calculation of which defeated even the most sophisticated computer programmes. ‘This was literally a monumental task,’ says Terry Dean, Managing Director of DW Windsor. ‘At every stage there has been a challenge, from the logistics of manufacturing on such a large scale to the millimetre-precision need to make sure the aluminium cladding panels fitted exactly together. The two-year long project has been one of the most difficult that DW Windsor has undertaken to date, but has broadened our expertise considerably.’

A true collaboration between all parties involved, the arches are hoped to provide an instantly recognisable iconic structure, which in time may become as identifiable as the Blackpool Tower.

Lighting Design Awards, Lighting Designer of the Year 2010 announced

DW Windsor proud to support the Lighting Design Awards for the eighth consecutive year

DW Windsor Managing Director Terry Dean, was delighted to present the award of Lighting Designer of the Year 2010 to Bernhard Bstieler, of Inverse Lighting Design at this year's Lighting Design Awards.

The judging panel praised the 2010 designer of the year, Bernhard, as a major emerging talent and master of composition and balance regardless of budget. Bernhard has shown great attention to detail and inventiveness as demonstrated within Inverse Lighting’s award winning Sound Club project, winner of the International Project category.

DW Windsor lighting was proud to feature on the finalist list within the External Luminaire, Product Innovation category and for their Brilliance scheme in Blackpool, as entered by Blackpool Council, within the Special Projects category, highly commended by the judging panel.

Battersea Bridge announced winner at the LIF EMILAS awards

Following the LIF EMILAS (Energy Management and Innovation in Lighting) awards yesterday, DW Windsor are extremely proud to report that Battersea Bridge was announced the winning project, within the Road & Amenity Lighting category.

The awards have been established to encourage the earlier refurbishment of existing lighting installations and to recognise and award those lighting schemes which have shown proven energy savings, flexibility of usage and innovation.

The EMILAS scheme hopes to help Government (and its agencies) achieve overall UK Carbon (Co2) reduction targets while promoting the importance of good lighting in design, utilising innovative products and best practise in energy efficiency.

DW Windsor are extremely pleased to announce this month that we have added to our impressive accreditation portfolio (DW Windsor have been ISO 9001 registered since May 2000), with the formal approval and certification of ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management).

Addressing increasing energy and maintenance costs, DW Windsor Lighting have launched an ‘upgrade-to-save’ philosophy that could strike a chord with many a cash-strapped local authority with the introduction of their DWW LED Light Engine.

Enabling quick and easy conversion on-site of existing DW Windsor HID products to LED, the DWW Light Engine is available in four distributions providing like-for-like replacement of their patented Diamond Optic® reflector settings. DW Windsor shortlisted for two Lux Ecolight Awards

DW Windsor Lighting is delighted to have been shortlisted for not one but two Lux Ecolight Awards.

Recognising what has been a pivotal year for our environmental strategy, DW Windsor are proud to be just one of three manufacturers to have been shortlisted for the Environmental Manufacturer of the Year award. We have also been shortlisted within the Award for Urban Lighting category, for our Essex Street Steps project which features our illuminated LED handrail Garda (a product highly commended at this year’s Lighting Design Awards).

Managing Director Terry Dean commented ‘being shortlisted for the Lux and Ecolight Environmental Manufacturer of the Year Award is an extremely rewarding achievement for all at DW Windsor. Double Win for Garda Illuminated Handrail at LUX Awards 2011

We were highly honoured to win the Award for Urban Lighting at the inaugural LUX Awards Ceremony held at Chelsea Football Ground on 9th November 2011. The scheme recognised was Essex Street Steps London, using the popular Garda handrail to illuminate the aging Victorian steps between the Royal Courts of Justice and Temple tube station. This saw off stiff competition for the most outstanding lighting refurbishment in the public realm.

Alan Grant, our Design and Development Director, who received the award said: ‘we are very proud to receive this award for Garda. It is very encouraging to think our industry recognises the attention to detail we put into not only designing Garda, but also the whole scheme and installation process.’

Dave Franks, City of Westminster commented on the scheme: ‘utilising DW Windsor’s Garda illuminated handrail has enabled us to effectively and safely light Essex steps, whilst reducing the carbon footprint of the site through reducing maintenance cycles. We are extremely happy as this solution has ticked all the boxes; improving public and workforce safety, reducing environmental impact and it operates with our central management system’.

Garda LED Illuminated Handrail
Garda, which uses LED technology with symmetric or genuine asymmetric distribution, received a double recognition with a highly commended for the Luminaire of the Year, Exterior category at the LUX Awards. This is the second ‘highly commended’ awarded to Garda: it also received this accolade at the Lighting Design Awards 2011.

Gold for DW Windsor in the RoSPA Occupational H&S Awards 2012

DW Windsor Lighting has been awarded the RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Gold Award for Occupational Health and Safety.

The extremely prestigious Gold award, awarded to those organisations that demonstrate the most robust of health and safety management systems, leadership and workforce involvement, will be presented at the Hilton Birmingham Metropol hotel on Tuesday 15th May.

DW Windsor’s Health and Safety Manager, Simon Edwards commented: "Effective health and safety management is a vital part of our business, we encourage best practice and continuous improvement throughout the organisation and so are extremely proud of our Gold achievement which puts us among the top 4% of over 6,000 awarded companies”.

David Rawlins, Awards Manager at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) said: “we congratulate DW Windsor for their success and encourage their continued commitment to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line”.

The Hertfordshire-based company’s commitment to health and safety was last acknowledged in March 2011, with their formal BSI OHSAS 18001 certification.
